DIY Sunscreen Lotions
1. Coconut sunscreen
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup Shea butter
- 1/8 cup sesame oil or jojoba oil
- 2 tbsps beeswax granules
- 1 to 2 tbsps non-nano zinc oxide powder
- 1 tsp red raspberry seed oil
- I tsp carrot seed oil
- 1 tsp lavender essential oil
In a double boiler, melt together coconut oil, sesame oil, and Shea butter. It will take time to melt at first but should eventually get smooth enough. The beeswax will be the last to melt. When the mixture is cool, take it off of the stove and stir in your zinc oxide. Stir it in and set it aside until you need it for your project – or apply it to your skin immediately! If you notice any lumps, don’t worry that’s normal. You’ll want the mixture to cool down in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.
Then, you can whisk it when you’re ready. Once it’s been in the refrigerator for long enough, take it out. You can use a food processor or hand mixer to help break and whip the cream. Drizzle in the essential oils and continue whisking until you have a light and fluffy mixture. Whisk liberally, as you would with store-bought sunscreen.
Store this homemade sunscreen in a glass container in the fridge between uses.
2. Sunscreen bars
- 1/3 cup melted coconut oil
- 3 cups Shea butter
- 1/2 cup grated, tightly packed beeswax
- 2 rounded tbsps + 1.5 tbsps uncoated, non-nanoparticle zinc oxide
- 1 tsp cacao or cocoa powder, for color
- Essential oils
- Vitamin E oil
Melt together coconut oil and Shea butter. Then, stir in the zinc oxide. All that’s left to do is remove your mixture from the heat and mix until smooth. If you’re adding the optional essential oils or vitamin E, combine them in a separate bowl. Once blended, pour the smoothie into silicon muffin tins. You can use any kind of mold for these though. Allow them to cool before removing them from the pans and storing them! If you’d like to speed things along, pop them in the freezer for 10 to 20 minutes.

3. Sun relief spray
- 1/2 to 1 cup of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
- Spray bottle
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil
- 1 tsp organic coconut oil
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
By spraying a mixture of apple cider vinegar onto your skin after sun exposure, you can reduce the amount of time it will take for your skin to heal and can remove dead cells left by the sun. Be sure to keep it away from your eyes and ears as well. Mix lavender essential oil, aloe vera gel, and carrier oil in a bowl. Then, sit back and watch the skin become softer as the apple cider vinegar dries. Apply a mixture of honey and yogurt to the affected areas every few hours or as needed. Repeat the whole process as needed to alleviate irritation and help soothe raw skin.
